Raspberry Pi: Raspian disadvantages of embedded OS

The last 12 month have been a „golden“ time of the upcomming embedded linux devices, but the custom OS’s offers some problems, you should know for projects:

  • embedded PC’s like the ARM based pi2 / pi3 uses a own compiled OS
  • not every known debian package is available
  • not all compile scripts to rebuild are available on git
  • slow performance can let you run into unuseable problems (heat, load, I/O), correct written scripts run into freezes without any error made by you!
  • you should take time for a closer look at buying them
  • calc the costs of non-x86 systems, later you cant often upgrade, cause embedded systems are not made for
  • dealers take too much money for less performance!
  • embedded devices can’t be grown up for additional precs like compression based on chips!
  • embedded devices need less energy, but can hangup by load over 65%, cause no cooling
  • the are made for learning and small control jobs
  • for NAS / Server jobs take x86 m-atx / micro-atx, cause you can access easy full debian packages
  • not all python + libs packages are available to run projects (example: acd_cli amazon cloud nas backup)
  • current embedded pc livetime at multimedia usage may be 24month cause to much and faster changes

May be that the arm os package trees may grow up, then we can talk again, but current x86 is the cheapest way to build systems without stress! And you have always the reserve to buildin new things of hardware..

A free Howto to get a free Chromebook Replacement: Called Firefoxbook

Everybody knows a product called chromebook, but you must not buy such a laptop with branded OS! Here is a small  Howto get a similar Laptop with free firefox.

How does it work? Easy, the Laptop boots from Stick or CF-Card to RAMDISK, the firefox profile and cache is always new created at non permanent RAMDISK. The private Mode surpress cookie and other waste. Only the Window Settings are stored (Fullscreen/ F11). After boot the Internet is connected and Firefox is shown on Desktop.

All you need:

  • a Laptop, can be a older one, i prefer Thinkpads
  • a Wireless/LAN Card if not available inside
  • 4GB USB Stick or 4GB CF-Disk with ATA-CF-Adaptor
  • Time to work
  • Tinycorelinux at CD source http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/

Let’s do:

  • Download Tinycorelinux and burn it to CD
  • reboot the Laptop on the CD to tinycore
  • open a Terminal and enter #sudo tc-install
  • follow instructions
  • reboot the Laptop and remove the CD
  • boot the Laptop on the USB Stick
  • check network connection
  • if not available plugin LAN cable reboot again on stick
  • or setup WIFI with the WIFI Manager
  • check internet connection again
  • if the Laptop is online install firefox with: #tce-load -wi firefox
  • NOW!! Create first a firefox profile on the RAMDISK!!
  • do run as tc user #firefox -P
  • create new firefox profilename „tmp“ locate it at /tmp
  • now run as user tc #firefox, close firefox!
  • edit now /opt/.filetool.lst with #sudo vi /opt/.filetool.lst
  • add „tmp/localstore.rdf“ line, close and save
  • edit as user tc #vi /home/tc/.setbackground
  • add line „sh /tmp/tcloop/firefox/usr/local/firefox-official/firefox –private“
  • save settings to USB Stick called mydata.tgz with #filetool.sh -b“
  • run #sudo reboot

Enjoy a Firefoxbook with always safe browsing option! On every reboot the old cached data are really lost cause the profile is always placed inside ramdisk and never on chip!

Do always reboot or shutdown without backup by menu, or push only the Laptop Power Button to auto delete waste at poweroff. Other Browsers can be used also (Opera).

Linux Green IT: Basics to save Energy and Resources

Problem: Every User today read a lot of articles on the Net about Green-IT, but the basics are often forgotten!


  1. Current Office PCs and Servers need a lot of Energy at the Offices
  2. Current and new Operating Systems need more and faster Hardware
  3. The Industries blow up Applications and Online Webpages with animated Applets you never need
  4. Current Hardware produce more and more heat, which you have to cool


If you want to go the right way at your IT Future then do remark these points:

  1. Plan your IT Future detailed !!!!
  2. Make a sheet of all needed Software Applications you want to use daily
  3. Go online, search for the manufacter detailed Datasheets of Hardware and check them for power, noise and heat values, if not detailed offered the DONT BUY IT !!
  4. Buy your low powered, cool and low noise Hardware
  5. Create a Testing System PC or Server and check the real data against datasheets for power, noise and heat with equipment tools, if there are wrong values then send it back to reseller !!
  6. Remove unneeded Hardware Parts, like CDROM, PCI Cards,Wireless Cards… everything needs power
  7. Now take a closer look at your needed Software for installed size on disk, ram usage, licence costs
  8. Search for smallest replacements of your used Software, don’t install it or remove unneeded parts
  9. You don’t need a big Office Software Package (up to 4000MB Data ) to type Letters or eMails daily
  10. Green IT Basic is use a smallest count of „Bits and Bytes“
  11. On Linux install a „netinstall“ System with smallest Size
  12. Install a light Window Desktop Manager without any animations!
  13. Check Ram Usage, remove unneeded Packages
  14. If you can recompile Applications without unneeded Modules
  15. Removing unneeded Applications and Widgets tune up Speed and Security
